The Secret Origin of
Nothing in life is perfect…rough edges, a broken line, a rushed deadline…these attributes can be wielded as a creative tool and offer freedom from self-defeating expectations. It is in this belief that 80% Studios is firmly entrenched. Founded in Seattle, WA in 2010 by Dimi Macheras and Casey Silver, the name is the result of a failed tryout for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon wherein the art director said our art was 80% there. This quickly became a joke thrown around by our peers, but instead of letting it derail us, it became the flag upon which we rallied. A symbol of motivation to follow our own path, no matter how steep the mountain.
Over the course of the past 12 years, 80% Studios has self published 7 comic books, co-founded Nemesis Enforcer, a Seattle based comix anthology and put on our own version of a comic convention, Hometown Heroes. This live comic art experience brought together over 20 local creators, 10 local businesses, as well as aspiring student artists and countless fans in a celebration of the Seattle art community.
Since 2021, 80% Studios has pushed the boundaries of what is capable with the graphic novel medium by incorporating live multi-media performances and interactive storytelling workshops for all ages. Through dedication, perseverance and most importantly teamwork, we aim to show the next generation of storytellers that the act of creation and sharing it with the world, rather than holding out for perfection, is the 80% way!
